FUNDRAISING REPORT

For those of you who are new members of the club, we have for the past few
years concentrated on 3 fundraisers.

March- Rowathon in the Chako-Mika Mall $4,000.00 (anticipated revenue)
May- Garage Sale at the Boathouse $1,000.00
June- Nelson Sprints Regatta $1,500.00
  Total revenue $6,500.00

A review of these events:

1. Rowathon- This is our most successful fundraiser with last year's total
reaching $4,000.00. It is also a good time to promote the NRC and the sport
of rowing. Our display includes historical photographs, rowing videos, one
of the single sculls and 4 ergometers. Our next rowathon's goal is again
$4,000.00. We can reach that if EVERYONE participates. We will give you
plenty of notice when we mail out the pledge forms for late Feb.-early
March. All funds will go toward the purchase of a quad.

2. Garage Sale- Three years ago, this event raised $1,000.00. This past year
brought in only $325.00. Why? Lack of participation and good quality big
ticket items. It was very disappointing to go thru donations and find dolls
with missing arms, a single running shoe or an incomplete puzzle or
chemistry set. A garage sale can be profitable... one example from last
year- in 10 mins. we made $150.00 by selling a stereo set and a slide
projector.

3. The Nelson Sprints was cancelled just days before the event due to lack
of registration. Kim Shea spent countless hours on the phone with many
clubs- all withdrawing regretfully for various reasons. Junior rowers
writing exams, no boats, no boat trailers, other regattas, drivers and
coaches not able to attend, etc. We had been planning this event for months
and building on our reputation from past years as hosting the "Friendliest
Regatta Ever". The $70.00 registration fee included all rowing events, a
regatta toque, dinner reception, a boat maintenance workshop, breakfast, a
massage, refreshments and pizza at the award and a chance to win a metal
rowing sculpture. Because of the work involved, we've always considered it a
chance to raise funds also. Comments from NRC members ranged from "too
expensive" to "how much just to row" to "a regatta shouldn't be a
fundraiser". Kim and I assumed our club would pull together, promote and
support the only regatta scheduled for the interior this past season. The
lack of support was disappointing. So, if anyone has other suggestions to
raise $1,000.00-$2,000.00 please step forward, we would love to hear from you!

JUNIOR PROGRAM REPORT

This year, all rowers have the opportunity to learn how to sweep row.
This type of rowing dominates U.S. junior rowing programs, Canadian and
American Universities, and many prominent, competitive regattas (ie. Brentwood
regatta). Having these skills will allow our rowers to enter many more
events (pair, four and the eight). We are fortunate at this time to have 2
coaches who have sweep rowing experience. Kate Plant medaled at the
Henley in a pair.

Kim has had "the Wong" rigged for sweep rowing. She has also arranged to
borrow sweep blades from the Creston Rowing Club. These still need to be
picked up. Is anyone going to Creston?

The club is also planning to purchase a new quad/four for this spring. This
boat is a convertible. It can be easily changed from a quad to a four. The
cost is $9,000,00 without shipping and tax. In order to purchase this boat,
the club would have to raise $4000.00. Last year we made $4000.00 from the
ergathon. Another successful ergathon this year would cover the balance.
This boat type would benefit and be utilized by all NRC rowing groups
(Masters, Juniors, Rowing Academy and LTR). It is an excellent team building
boat. It is versatile, providing as opportunity to learn both sweep and
sculling skills. And it is safer to row than the smaller boats on those days
when the weather is questionable.

Junior Rowing Schedule:

Saturday at 9:30 a.m.
Monday and Wednesday at 3:45 p.m.
Thursday 6:15 a.m. (next week only)
Monday morning practice is cancelled.

Kim would like to take the juniors to "Head of Spokane" on October 22. This
is an invitational regatta. It is a 5 km. head race which is traditional
very well attended by high schools. She has made arrangements to borrow a
sweep 4. Kim needs to know ASAP if you are planning to attend. Four rowers
must commit and train for this regatta or it will be cancelled.

For those of you who have not paid your Oct. fees- please do so!

ROWING ACADEMY

The NRC is pleased to support the High School Rowing Academy. This program
is suitable for those athletes with competitive goals.

Recent update from Carl Repp:

Through many conversations with LVR, a decision to delay the start-up of a
Rowing Academy was made. A second semester Academy will be offered running
February-June with students scheduled "in-timetable". The reason for the
delay is based on a number of factors:

1. Students had already completed 2 weeks of classes and the disruption to
scheduling may not be in students' best interest.
2. Planning and preparation of 2nd semester student timetables will be done
to have the least impact on achievement.
3. More time to develop a training and competition plan with the rowing club.
4. Possible BCTF job disruption.

I would like to hold a meeting with all interested parents in late November
to discuss the possibilities.

Thanks
Carl Repp

PURCHASES AND FACILITY IMPROVEMENTS

This year we have purchased:

2 sets of croker oars
1 Alden single scull

1 single scull (Jaws 2)- Donated by Marg

Over the spring and summer, Tom and Peter have transported club boats to
Chris Cochrane's workshop for repairs and sometimes complete overhauls.
Kysa, for example, has been completely rebuilt. Thank-you to Tom , Peter
and Chris for keeping our boats on the water.

It is important that the club allocate money each year towards completion
and/or maintenance of the boathouse. We have decided to pour a concrete
floor in the west bay of the boat house this fall.

CLUB BYLAWS

This past summer after the dismissal of our head coach it was brought to our
attention of the executive that our club bylaws are out of dated and do not
adequately represent both the masters and junior rowers and their
parents.

To address this issue the executive sought legal advice on the issue and we
discovered that using a stricted legal interpretation of the club bylaws no
one is a member of the club, including those who have paid their
membership fee.

To rectify this situation we plan to adopt the standard set of bylaws that
are attached to the Society Act and are normally implemented when new
Societies are created. To accompany the bylaws the executive will propose a
set of resolutions that will define various types of members and will form
the working rules of the club. The intent of this change is allow each
family of a junior rower to have a vote.

We plan to have a general meeting in the fall to explain and discuss and
hopefully implement these
proposed changes so that we will have a legal membership list for the AGM.
The proposed bylaws and resolutions will be circulated at a later date.

I would like to Thank Greg Osadchuk for his work as treasurer this past
year. Due to family and work commitments Greg was not able to continue on
the executive and Maurice has kindly agreed to take on the role as
Treasurer.
